Hi there, I’m writing this while listening to planes taking off from San Franscisco airport. Our hotel is literally at the end of the runway! If I can’t sleep I’ll be able to sit and count planes taking off. Anyway we saved a good bit of money staying that little bit out of the city centre so I’m not complaining.
We left Mariposa this morning and made the 3.5 hour drive to the Pacific coast. After arriving and finding our way to the hotel we headed off towards San Francisco itself to see what we could find. We decided to try the Golden Gate Bridge first and see what it had to offer. It was quite easy to find even with a lot of traffic. We didn’t actually drive on the famous bridge but pulled into a viewing car park at the southern end called Fort Point. We took a walk to the first of the towers that make up the bridge, about a ten minute walk. You get amazing views of the city from here and also Alcatraz in the middle of the bay.
The sun had set by the time we had made the obligitary stop at a gift shop. We decided to take a drive into the downtown area of the city. We got see up close the steep streets this place is famous for, good job the brakes are ok in the car! The plan is to get back into the centre of town over the next couple of days and explore the place on foot so that should be a lot more interesting.
Tomorrow’s main excitement is a trip to an american football match. Jill kept pestering me to go so I gave in……..alright it was me! We got tickets to see the San Francisco 49ers v Philidelphia Eagles at Candlestick Park. We’ll get back to you with a match report tomorrow night.
Jonny
