Beware of Bambi….

Posted by halfwayround on October 10, 2008

Its blogging time again people. We didn’t get a chance to update you on yesterdays events due to a lack of an internet connection. You didn’t miss too much as it was one of those days where not a lot happened.

We left Las Vegas in the morning and started to head southwest towards Los Angeles. We made a quick stop to investigate what was on offer at an Outlet Centre at a place called Primm. It was a bit like junction 1 sort of idea. Shops is shops so not much more to say about that.

Soon after this we entered California, our 16th and last state on the trip. We were heading in the general direction of Yosemite National Park but didn’t want to drive the whole way in one day so eventually stopped for the night in a city called Bakersfield. It was the hottest day so far, according to the radio it was up to 100F so thats mid 30’s i think. Air conditioning in the car is great but the heat hits you all the harder when you step out into the real world!!

This morning we got up early and headed on to Yosemite. We are staying in another campsite here just outside a little town called Midpines, which according to the sign has a population of 241 people! Managed to get here by luchtime and get our stuff unloaded then it was off to do some exploring. We made our way around to the southern entrance of the park which took about an hour from where we are staying. Here we were able to go see the Mariposa Grove which has about 500 Sequoia trees dotted through it.

Its amazing! The trees are massive as you might imagine, but really its easier to see them than describe them so I’ll let you see some photos….

By the time we had seen round the grove time was getting on and we headed back to base. On the way out of the park we came across a doe & fawn deer crossing the road! We stopped to watch them and they stopped and stared right back at us as well. There’s something a little bit strange about them when they look at you, like they might just turn around and trample all over the car if they felt like it. Or maybe I’ve been out in the sun to look and I’m imagining things!

So anyway we’re now back in the safety of our cabin and watching the people in the one next door cook on their BBQ. Tomorrow we are heading back into a different part of the park to see Yosemite valley itself and hopefully lots more.

Will keep you posted,

Jonny
