So what time is it anyway??

Hello people, Jonny again here with some thoughts for today.
Surprise surprise you find us tonight at another campsite, this time not far from the town of Williams, Arizona. The plan is to stay here for a couple of nights and use this as a base to explore the Grand Canyon and surrounding area.
We left Santa Fe early this morning but not before we had stopped off at a book shop Jill had spotted yesterday evening. She was starting to get concerned about running out of reading material and also the possability of not coming across another book emporium on the rest of our travels! Anyway with a couple of new books purchased and safely stored on the back seat of the car we were ready to face the road ahead.
Firstly we headed south towards Albequrque then rejoined the I40 and headed west again. We stopped off in the town of Gallup for lunch and by this stage the weather had started to deteriorate. Driving into Arizona the early part of the afternoon was spent trying to see through lashing rain which made us all the more happy knowing we were to spend the night at a campsite!
We pulled off the interstate to check out Meteor Crater (thankfully the rain had moved on and let the sun come back out by this stage). It’s a 1 mile diameter, 3 mile circumference and 550ft deep hole in the ground which is also in the middle of nowhere. Its pretty impressive up close and looks really out of place as its right slap in the middle of a flat desert plain.

Meotor Crater - Arizona
We arrived at the crater at what we thought was 4.30pm and went up to the booth to buy some tickets to get in and have a look down into this over-sized hole. We got our tickets and noticed that they said the time was 3.30pm. This was a bit confusing, we had crossed into Mountain time yesterday when we got to New Mexico and weren’t expecting to get to Pacific time until Las Vegas. We asked a fellow touristy type to see if he knew what was going on but he didn’t seem too sure which end of the crater he was at let alone time so we moved on.
So we arrived at Cicrle Pines KOA and got ourselves checked into a cabin. We also found the answer to our time question. Turns out the state of Arizona does not observe daylight savings time so during the summer it 1 hour behind the rest of the mountain time zone and the same time as the pacific time zone. Meaning we are now 8 hours behind home.
Interesting facts for today: (thought it was time to revive this little feature)
- We have passed the 3000 miles mark with our driving
- Random place names we saw today: Two Guns, Twin Arrows & Winona to name but a few
- Sorry that’s all the facts I can think of, not even sure they were that interesting.
So tomorrow head of in search of another more famous hole in the ground! We’ll let know what all the fuss is about next time we write.
